My first mobility scooter had three wheels, and for a long time, it worked beautifully.
My husband and boys could lift it in and out of my SUV, which made it perfect for theme parks and bigger outings. If we knew there would be a lot of walking, the scooter came with us. I also used it inside my house, and for a couple of years, it gave me freedom and independence.
As time went on and my balance changed, what once worked well started to feel less stable. I eventually switched to a four-wheel scooter for better stability. The difference was immediate, especially for daily use at home.
The trade-off is weight. My four-wheel scooter is heavier and harder to load into my SUV, and I don’t have a lift. Because of that, for public places like work, school events, and kids’ sports, I use my lightweight wheelchair instead.
For a long time, choosing a scooter or wheelchair felt like losing my battle with walking. Now I see them as a blessing — because they allow me to show up for life.
